5 Essential Tips for a Happy, Well-Adjusted Dog

Hi there! One of the questions I hear most often is some version of, "What should I be doing every day?" It is a great question, because the truth is that a happy, well-adjusted dog is built in small daily moments far more than in any one training session. The habits below are the ones I come back to with almost every client I work with.

Start with predictability. Dogs settle more easily when meals, walks, and rest happen in a rhythm they can anticipate. That does not mean your life needs to run on a stopwatch, only that your dog can guess what usually comes next. Predictability lowers stress, and a dog with lower stress learns faster and recovers from surprises more quickly.

Next, give your dog real outlets for the things they were built to do. Sniffing, chewing, shredding, and problem solving are not bad behaviors, they are needs. When we make room for them on purpose, through scatter feeding, snuffle mats, long decompression walks, or a safe chew after dinner, those needs stop showing up in ways we did not choose.

Finally, protect rest and pay attention to what your dog is telling you. Many of the dogs I meet are not defiant, they are exhausted or overwhelmed. Learning to read the early signals, the lip lick, the turned head, the slow freeze, lets you step in before your dog feels the need to shout. That is the heart of force-free training: listening first, then teaching.
